Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia – The Tigray Disability Organisation Union (TDOU) has distributed 355 dozen exercise books to students with disabilities as part of its ongoing efforts to promote inclusive education and improve access to educational materials across the region.

The exercise books were donated by Ethio telecom to the Federation of Ethiopian Associations of Persons with Disabilities (FEAPD), which facilitated their distribution to regional organizations. Through this initiative, TDOU received a total of 750 dozen exercise books, of which 355 dozen were distributed during an event held at the Ethio telecom Northern Region Office meeting hall.

The event brought together representatives of Ethio telecom, disability organizations, partner institutions, parents, and students with disabilities. Participants included Mr. Mulu Weldeselassie, Manager of Ethio telecom’s Northern Region; Dr. Ykalo Weldu, Executive Director of ACSOT; Mr. Yohannes Arkebe, Chairman of the TDOU Board of Directors; Mr. Gebrekidan Hadush, Executive Director of TDOU; and Mr. Ashenafi Asmelash, Executive Director of Mums for Mums. Chairpersons of various Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), parents of children with disabilities, and students with disabilities also attended the event.

He emphasized that the company would continue to provide support to persons with disabilities as part of its commitment to social responsibility and community development.

In his remarks, Mr. Gebrekidan Hadush, Executive Director of TDOU, stated that the remaining 395 dozen exercise books would be distributed to zonal Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs). This second phase of distribution aims to ensure that students with disabilities at both zonal and woreda levels benefit from the initiative, extending its reach to more learners across Tigray.

The initiative represents an important contribution towards promoting inclusive education and addressing some of the educational material needs of students with disabilities. By improving access to essential school supplies, the programme seeks to support learners with disabilities in their educational journeys and encourage their meaningful participation in the education system.

TDOU extends its sincere appreciation to Ethio telecom for its generous donation and to FEAPD for facilitating the distribution of the exercise books. TDOU also acknowledges the collaboration of partner organizations, OPDs, parents, and other stakeholders in advancing the rights, inclusion, and educational opportunities of persons with disabilities throughout Tigray.
